Why tradespeople get MTD-ready with Traddie
Frequently asked questions
What is Making Tax Digital for Income Tax?
MTD for Income Tax is an HMRC programme that changes how self-employed people and landlords report income. Instead of one Self Assessment a year, you keep digital records and send HMRC a short update every quarter using compatible software, followed by a final declaration after the tax year ends.
When does it start, and does it affect tradespeople?
It’s phased in by income: from April 2026 for qualifying income over £50,000, April 2027 over £30,000, and April 2028 over £20,000. Tradespeople working as sole traders are squarely affected, which is why Traddie tracks your income and flags your date.
Does Traddie file directly with HMRC?
VAT returns: yes — Traddie builds the 9-box return from your records and submits it to HMRC (currently in beta). Income Tax quarterly updates: the filing is built and going through HMRC’s approval process now; until Traddie is on HMRC’s recognised list, your figures are ready to file via your accountant or recognised software. Always confirm final numbers before filing.
How does Traddie keep my records MTD-ready?
Every quote, invoice and scanned receipt you create becomes a digital record automatically. Traddie sorts income and expenses into the correct quarters, calculates VAT and CIS, and shows your profit as it builds — so when an update is due, the figures are already there.
